Term 8 2012 Start Block Week

Freeman White – Portraits from Photos

Freeman is a generous and caring tutor, he gave us a demonstration of his techniques and we had a very positive and productive week. I managed to get two portraits done that I am very pleased with.
Although he did say what Roger and Marc has said in the past to me - use more paint!

Recommended paints Schmincke or Old Holland

Create a tonal map ie paint over sketch with Yellow ochre and burnt umber thinned with lean medium using size 4,6 and 8 hogs or sable square head.

Titanium white is very opaque so is not good for skin tones (good for final highlights) Zinc white is semi transparent but cold. Flake white or lead white is the best for skin, warm, buttery and semi transparent however lead is very poisonous and hard to come by so mixed white (Titanium and Zinc) is the closest on toxic option.

Reds - Ruby lake – blushing cheeks, lips Cadmium red – good all rounder Alzerian crimson – lips

To produce a radiant glow use a transparent brown iron oxide.
