Term 2 2010 End Block Week

Robert Frankin

A life model and a trip into Wellington botanical gardens the goal to incorporate the nude into 3 natural and 2 manmade objects. Use the warm up sketches to lay out the bodies on the page to practice composition, look at negative space, leave out parts of the body to place another pose in front or behind, giving a more 3D effect. Try to mix line work and broad form and shade work, use crayon, pastel, paint ink and pencil. Sketch and photograph at the gardens

My ideas – wildbean cup tipped over with figures spilling out? Seed pods with fairies emerging? Falling leaves covering a reclining nude?

I had trouble with this exercise, What I painted in the week, I’ve painted over not liking it at all. We had two models this week working together which in one way was great but it was a challenge as well, trying to get the amount of detail you want is bad enough with one body and 10minutes two!
