Term 5 2011

Monday – Gary Freemantle – Painting freely and Fluently

I like Gary’s exercises they gave me a vehicle within which to create, Design money, fold a three dimensional form from paper and paint it ( I painted them within a landscape) Fold brown paper and paint segments in primary colours.

Wednesday – Jane Blackmore – Oil Painting for Beginners

Scrumbling: Load your bush, vary your mark and change pressure to lay the paint down

Blending: Work with two brushes one with light, one with dark paint. You can mix in liquin to thin and spread the paint smoothly.

Ala Prima: Is a style of painting where the piece painted while wet in one sitting, although in oils the painting can remain workable for some days.

Too much  linseed and pigments separate. Work from thin to thick avoiding layers drying at different rates  hence cracking. Work from dark to light. ‘Every mark should have an intention.’ Titanium white takes a long time to dry so it’s the last thing to put down. Clean your brush with warm water and soap or natural turpentine.

This is my first play with oils and I like them, they are not as time restrictive as acrylics (dry too quickly). I’ve decided to have a go at landscapes in this class.
Jane is a marvellous mentor, very encouraging, she is able to look at you painting and guide you to see what it is that needs doing to improve or to fix a problem.

Friday – Roger Key – Drawing with Wet and Dry Media

Crayon and brown paper to do black and white photos .I decided to focus on portraits of my family.

Rogers technique teaches you reproduce what you see rather than draw what your brain tells you a head or nose or arm looks like, which is always distorted. Look at light and darks and draw  things in relationship to each other, if you can fool yourself it’s not even a body your sketching, not using lines just shapes, you will be amazed at the result.
